The Story Behind the Design

For generations, the Old Man of the Mountain watched over Franconia Notch and became one of New Hampshire’s most recognizable landmarks. Although the formation fell in 2003, its profile remains an enduring symbol of the state.

The photograph featured in this design was captured by photographer Ed Cooper in the fall of 1973 on 4x5 film using a telephoto lens, preserving the Old Man as generations of New Hampshire residents and visitors remember it.
